Lately, Iāve been catching myself repeating the same thought to different groups of people, almost like Iām a wise person with a MESSAGE:
āItās been 13 years since Iāve wintered properly! You know, winteringāthat phase when the cold makes you stay home more than go out, where laziness feels like a natural rhythm, and itās okay for your body to soften a little. You spend more time in your room, eat heartier, greasier food, and just⦠embrace the winter.ā
Donāt get me wrongāI love the sun, and I love Dubai. But throw in some FOMO, and slowing down gets way harder. How dare I stay in, when the sun is shining like this?
When the rest of the world is layering up in autumn and winter, weāre at the beach, enjoying our post-heat finally-good-weather summer. And when Dubai turns unbearable in its deep summer heat, we escape, summering elsewhere.ā
So, when do I get to just⦠slow down? To not always be on? To happily be a bit chubbier, knowing winter would pass, and my body will bounce back with spring.
Since I got a whoop at the start of the year, I have been leaning into a season of SLEEP. In whoopās terminology, my average sleep āperformanceā is 86%, which is a fancy way of saying, your girl has been going to TOWN in Slumber City. The irony is not lost on me that it takes a wearable device, and its performance-oriented metrics, to give me permission to RESTš¤ .
As a 32-year-old, ambitious, urban-dweller, living in a city of eternal summers, it takes a moment to realise that my body and mind also need seasons of āwinteringā, as Maria wisely reminds me, every.single.year. Is it going to look like the wintering of my Scandinavian counterparts with crackling fireplaces, sumptuous cashmere jumpers and pitch-black, frosty evenings? I think not. My version of modern hibernation looks like
lots of yummy lie-ins and early nights
opting out of too many social plans and being home more, guilt-free
morning beach walks with a light hoody (the hoody is symbolic, really)
weekends in the desert gathered around a fire and actually needing a hoody
spending WFH mornings at outdoor cafƩs
permission to do a little less, and dream a little more
Sidenote - did you notice our new look? Three Scoops also hibernated for a month or so, and behind the scenes, we spent time giving our branding and vision a wee facelift!
šš»What does modern hibernation look like for you? We are nosy, and want to know!
āIf you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.ā
